Two Paychecks Don't Fix All Problems - A poem of tough times

Folks don't get it.
They remember better days,
now in distant memories only,
when two paychecks solved
the financial woes of all.

They push to see movement,
not realizing the changes
in society since those days,
and the missing trust
which drives so many things.

Must have a stable life,
must hold a job
for at least six months,
and have many references
to get a home now.

Must have a work history
and be currently employed
to gain that first job,
then they want you
to have a second one.

Not seeing the exhaustion rising
from the long search
to get the first one,
claiming an ugly toll
on your health at last.

Blinded by the rules made
to ensure that wealth
accumulates at the top only,
never seeing the damage
done to those beneath them.

This is the transition time,
when you still try
to move onward to success
and more roadblocks appear
for you to stumble over.

That's where I'm at now,
stuck between the worlds
of the lowest of all
and those holding on
by just their cracking teeth.

I'll keep trying to move
ahead as I'm urged,
but give me some hope
that I can succeed,
lest I lose faith entirely.
