Gatherings - a poem of Homelessness

Like the animals others see us as
we move and gather in various groups
taking some bit of the grouping name
into our character by that simple act.

Along the lawns and parks you find
where the crashes occur, violent many times
or just the fallen debris from accidents
messy in all their ways, regardless which.

Around the shelter and downtown packs run,
preying upon the weaker ones, seeking wealth
by slight of hand, outright mugging you
or doing society's dark deeds amid shadows.

Around the bishop's center roams a coffle
braying donkeys all upset over others receiving
more than they got, or some slight
that sets off their loud outraged cries.

Up the hill there are some prides,
small groups of guys (and some gals)
who stand aloof from the mess below
trying to keep shreds of self-esteem.

Flocks of honkers, sick with some bug
noses sounding out loud blasts frequently
roam all the city, sign in hand
seeking spare change for some needed item.

There are more, but many blend together
especially on events that have free handouts
when so many mill together forming one,
a herd of homeless folks seeking sustenance.
